Mowgli
Headline DJ

Italian DJ & producer Michele Savasta started turning heads back in 2006 when he released Just Be / Mowgli Comes To Town under the guise of Mowgli on Mantra Breaks. Well, mine at least. It was going in the direction of that emerging Fidget sound, that Mr Jesse Rose and Dave 'Switch' Taylor so lovingly coined, but not quite. It was a little stripped back but jackin' nevertheless, quirky and a bit wonky. Well these are all fancy adjectives aren't they? But get this, Mowgli is now making big waves in the Midget House scene. What's that?! Midget? Yes. It's ironical word-play to describe a fusion of Fidget & Minimal House. It should be clear by now, these people dislike genres or labels to describe otherwise good music. Good, well-produced music should stand out on its own without needing a label. But how would we find what we're looking for in record stores. Oh, the paradox.

By the time the Oriente Espresso EP was released on Fresh Fish a couple of years later (a collaboration with another Italian producer simply, and somewhat ironically, called Solo). Mowgli's sound had become more distinguished and it was definitely taking a life of its own. It was clear he'd become an accomplished House music producer. Michele's roots in music go back much further, however. Before he took an interest in House, he was heavily involved in Hip Hop music, and even Drum & Bass for a short spell. But, and I quote, Mowgli says, "I don't like it anymore, it makes me anxious....too fast..." I couldn't agree more, I mean, there's something to be said for taking things slow and going back to basics. And Mowgli's catchphase is now, "Less is more..." Which leads me on nicely to a remix he did for Bass Kleph & Anthony Paul's Helium around the same time called Mowgli's Less Is More remix. It got great reactions on the dancefloor and the radio when I dropped it.

So now it was Mowgli's time. He'd remixed Armand van Helden's Shake That Ass on Southern Fried, and put out two of his EPs, Pa Po Pon and Sequencer on his own imprint called Deadfish Audio. And then got to remix the X-Press 2 classic Lazy; twice! All very well received by the big dance music industry types like Pete Tong and Annie Mac. Not to mention a very sought after naughty Michael Jackson bootleg.
And in the present, well, Mowgli is certainly not short on bookings! Especially now that he's been welcomed into the Made to Play stable with the very aptly titled I'm a DJ EP.
Oh, and don't tell anyone but we cheekily recorded Mowgli's recent guest mix on Kissy Sell Out's radio show... Go and have a listen. Go on!
